My favorite kind of early morning meeting

There’s something about a sunrise session on Topsail Island that feels sacred. The world is quiet, the air is soft, and the light is unlike anything else. At the very southern tip of Topsail Island, Serenity Point offers one of the most breathtaking backdrops in North Carolina; a place where the ocean and Intracoastal meet, and the rising sun paints the sky in golds and pinks. It's one of my favorite places to visit with my family and especially love it for my sessions.

Recently, I had the joy of photographing a beautiful sunrise photoshoot at Serenity Point with my radiant client and her sweet dog, Willow.

We arrived at the parking lot in the dark, loaded up the wagon, and began with a short walk along the beach, letting Willow explore the sand and waves. In order to help Willow feel comfortable with me (and my sometimes-loud camera), we started with a few simple poses in the wetlands bowl before moving toward the water. And that my friends is when the real magic happened ; jumping and splashing in the Intracoastal, chasing a stick we found along the way, and simply enjoying the playful bond between dog and owner.

As the sun crested over the horizon, the beach transformed. The glowing sunrise light wrapped everything in warmth; pinks, whites, and golden tones reflecting off the water and casting a magical glow over every moment. It was one of those mornings that makes you pause and remember why these fleeting connections are so important to capture. In fact, I caught myself just enchanted by the early morning sky becoming entwined with the water.

For me, sessions like this are a reminder of the beauty in documenting not just people, but the unconditional love we share with our pets. Dogs are part of our families, and including them in your session makes the story even more personal and meaningful.

✨ Yes, sunrise sessions mean an early morning wake-up call, but there’s nothing quite like starting your day with toes in the sand, salty air in your lungs, and the first light of morning spilling across the horizon.
